Steel doors

When people search for steel doors in the UK, they are almost always looking for the aesthetic: slim black metal profiles, large glass panels, and a look that feels considered and architectural. At Emezzi, that look is made in powder-coated aluminium with a 30 millimetre profile.

Once installed, the visual match to traditional steel is close enough that most people cannot tell the difference. The practical differences, however, are significant.

Steel doors at Emezzi, the slim look in aluminium

Emezzi’s steel internal doors deliver the full steel-look aesthetic: slim profiles, generous glass, and a clean finish that reads as architectural rather than functional. The 30 millimetre profile is slim enough that the glass dominates and the frame does not stand out, which is exactly how a well-specified steel-look door should read.

The doors are made from powder-coated aluminium rather than solid steel. That is a deliberate choice, and one Emezzi makes openly. The reasons are practical and covered in the next section.

You choose, we make it fit

Why “steel doors” usually means aluminium doors today

Most premium internal steel doors sold in the UK today are made from aluminium, not solid steel. That is true across the market, and for consistent reasons.

Aluminium is roughly 15 percent lighter than steel. It does not rust, which matters in kitchens, ensuites, and any space with moisture. It manufactures faster, which means that our doors have shorter lead times. It costs considerably less, which means the all-in price is lower without compromising on the slim profile or the finish quality.

The visible profile and the powder-coated finish are matched to steel closely enough that the difference is not visible once the door is installed. Emezzi makes this choice openly rather than blurring it.

Everything tailored to your wishes

Where do Emezzi steel doors work best?

Kitchen-to-living-room dividers are the single most common installation in UK homes. A bespoke steel door between an open-plan kitchen and a living room defines the two zones without blocking the light or closing the space down.

Ensuites and dressing rooms within primary suites are another natural fit, as are home offices carved out of larger rooms where a steel framed glass door creates a working space without completely separating it from the rest of the house.

Hallway-to-stairs transitions in Victorian and Edwardian terraces suit the slim aluminium profile particularly well, where the 30 millimetre frame respects the original room scale. Garden room and conservatory entrances round out the most common contexts for internal steel doors across the UK market.

Steel doors have been one of the most consistent interior design choices in UK renovation projects since 2018, when this style became popular again, and it shows no signs of fading.

The full Emezzi steel door range

By opening type

By opening type

Pivot doors suit statement entrances and taller door openings where the scale of the door is part of the design. Hinged doors are the most traditional and versatile choice, working across the widest range of openings and interiors. Sliding doors suit tight floor plans where the swing of a hinged door would be impractical. Flush doors are the minimalist option, aligning with the wall surface for a concealed install. Rebate doors give a sealed meeting edge for double-door configurations where air and light control matter. Double doors suit openings wider than 150 centimetres where a single leaf would look too narrow.

By style

By style

The two main aesthetic routes are fully glazed and crittall-style. Fully glazed is the modern minimalist option: the slim aluminium frame with uninterrupted glass and no bar divisions. Crittall-style uses horizontal and vertical bars to divide the glass into a multi-pane grid, giving the door its heritage industrial character. Both styles are available across all opening types. The choice is purely aesthetic.

By finish and colour

By finish and colour

Matt black RAL9005 is the most-specified finish and the default across the range. White suits heritage, coastal, and Scandi interiors where black would feel too industrial. Bronze is a warm contemporary alternative for design-led schemes. Gold is the statement choice. Any RAL colour is available at no extra cost.

Options

Glass and customisation

Laminated safety glass is standard across the range: six millimetre for pivot, ensuite, sliding, and flush doors, ten millimetre for hinged variants where the closing weight of the door requires it. The four standard glass options are clear, frosted, reeded, and bronze or grey tinted.

Arched tops and fanlight panels are available for heritage installs where the door needs to follow the original architectural detailing of the building. Any RAL colour is supported for the profile, and hardware is available in black, bronze, or brushed brass to match or contrast with the door finish.

Custom-made dimensions, fitted across the UK

Every Emezzi steel door is made to measure. Our specialist visits you for a measurement visit, confirms the opening dimensions, and checks the existing structure. The maximum width per panel is 150 centimetres. Wider door openings use fixed side panels, transoms, or a double-door configuration to extend the system without breaking the visual line.

Your door is manufactured in our workshop in The Netherlands and installed by Emezzi-authorised dealers across the UK. For all options, take a look at our external aluminium doors and our steel walls for matching partition configurations.

Expert advice

Pricing: what an Emezzi steel door actually costs

The price of a custom steel door depends on many factors: the dimensions, the opening type, the glass specification, the finish, and the number of side panels or additional elements in the assembly. There is no single starting price that would be honest to quote here.

What the configurator does give you is an exact all-in price for your specific configuration, including the measurement visit, manufacture, and installation. No surprise add-ons after the fact. Emezzi’s pricing typically comes in at roughly a third to a half of equivalent solid-steel doors from heritage specialists, with shorter lead times and dealers across the UK rather than just in London.

Are Emezzi steel doors actually made of steel?

Our doors are made from powder-coated aluminium, engineered to deliver the steel-look aesthetic with the practical advantages of aluminium: lighter, no rust, faster lead times, and more affordable than solid steel. The finish is visually indistinguishable from traditional steel once the door is installed.

What is the difference between steel doors and crittall doors?

“Steel doors” is the broad category covering all slim-profile metal-look doors, whether fully glazed or multi-pane.

“Crittall doors” refers specifically to the multi-pane heritage aesthetic, named after the original British Crittall company. All crittall doors are steel-look doors, but not all steel-look doors are crittall. A fully glazed minimalist door is steel-look without being crittall. Take a look at the full crittall doors range if the multi-pane look is what you are after.

Can steel doors be used externally?

The standard Emezzi range is designed for internal door openings and partially-protected external openings such as garden rooms, conservatories, and covered terraces. For fully external door openings exposed to UK weather, our standard range is not the right fit.

How does Emezzi compare to other UK steel-look door suppliers?

Most premium suppliers, particularly the heritage specialists, sell solid steel doors. Mid-market suppliers sell steel-look doors with a wood core that do not have the slim 30 millimetre profile.

Emezzi is in between: we are the supplier of real aluminium with a slim profile. Take a look at our live configurator pricing. Our lead times are measured in weeks. We work together with authorised dealers across the UK.

Are steel doors a good investment for resale value?

Slim-profile metal doors have been a consistent positive in UK property valuations since 2018, with interior specialists installing them in mid-to-premium homes. The slim aluminium profile reads as a contemporary investment that does not date in the way some trend-driven choices do.

What is the lead time from order to installation?

The typical lead time is six to ten weeks from signed quote to installation, subject to current production levels. The process runs in four steps: quote acceptance, measurement visit, manufacture, and installation. After you confirm your order, the dealer schedules the measurement visit within a fixed window.
