External aluminium doors

Most Emezzi doors with a steel-look are designed for inside use. External aluminium doors bring that same slim profile to garden rooms, conservatories, and covered outdoor entrances, but engineered specifically for the outside.

These are not interior doors moved outdoors. These doors are a dedicated external variant, but built on the same 30 millimetre aluminium profile as the internal range but with weather sealing, drainage, and security upgrades designed for the UK climate.

External aluminium doors, the steel-look for outside

Have you been looking for the steel-look aesthetic on a door and kept finding that the options either look too bulky or are not built for UK weather? We have the door that fills that gap.

The slim profile reads the same as the internal range. The engineering underneath it is different. Weather-sealed gaskets, threshold drainage, thermally-broken profiles, and multi-point locking are all standard on the external spec, not optional extras.

When are the external aluminium doors the right call?

Garden rooms are the most common use case for aluminium doors. A garden room with slim doors in black or white reads as an extension of the house rather than a separate outbuilding, and the external spec means the doors perform through a British winter without warping or letting the cold in.

Conservatories and orangeries are another strong fit, as are covered terraces and partially-protected back doors leading to a patio. For kitchen transitions, where the door is closed in winter and fully open in summer, an external aluminium door gives you that flexibility without compromising on weather performance. Aluminium interior doors and garden doors are among the most popular configurations we supply.

Why choose an overlay door?

Glass and thermal performance

External aluminium doors use double-glazed laminated safety glass as standard, rather than the single-glazed glass used in the internal range. This gives a meaningful improvement in thermal performance and meets the typical requirements for garden rooms and conservatories under UK building regulations.

For premium thermal performance, triple-glazed units are available as an upgrade. Our advisor confirms the right specification for your opening during a measurement visit.

Glass options for external use

Glass options for external use

Clear double-glazed laminated safety glass is the standard and the most popular choice for garden rooms, where the point is to maximise light and the view to the outside.

Frosted or reeded glass is perfect for door openings that are overlooked, where you want the light without the view in. Bronze and grey tinted glass reduce solar gain on south-facing openings where the summer sun would otherwise overheat the space. All glass is laminated safety glass to meet impact-resistance standards for external use.

Hardware and security

Hardware and security

Multi-point locking on the active leaf is standard on all external doors, with typically three locking points, depending on the configuration and your wishes. Hinged doors are invented for external use, and an anti-snap cylinder is available as an option for additional security.

For double-door configurations, the inactive leaf is secured with shootbolt locking at the top and bottom. The security level suits partially-protected external openings. Fully-exposed front doors should confirm PAS 24 and Secured by Design requirements with their insurer before specifying.

Where external aluminium doors are not the right call

Fully-exposed front doors, as primary house entrances are outside the scope of this product. Front doors have specific security requirements, including PAS 24 and Secured by Design standards, which buyers should confirm with their insurer. Doors from specialist front-door suppliers as Emezzi are usually the better fit for that specific use case.

Do you live in a house in beautiful surroundings at the sea shore, with severe salt-spray exposure? The standard specification covers most UK installations, but some exposed sites need an upgraded weather rating. Our specialist confirms this during a measurement visit.

Openings where fire-rating is a regulatory requirement are also outside scope. If your project requires a fire-rated external door, please get in touch and we will point you in the right direction.

What makes a door ‘external’, and how Emezzi engineers for it

The difference between an internal and an external aluminium door is not just the finish. It is the engineering inside the profile.

External aluminium doors are equipped with thermally-broken profiles, which means there is an insulating barrier within the aluminium that reduces cold transmission from outside to inside.

Weather-seals run around the full frame perimeter, and drainage channels at the threshold clear rainwater rather than letting it pool. The active leaf has multi-point locking as standard, which provides both weather compression and security.

A solution for every space

Door configurations for external use

The most common external configuration is a french-style double-leaf hinged door, outward-opening to a garden or terrace. This is perfect for garden rooms where both leaves need to open fully. For a single back door leading to a covered patio, a single outward-opening hinged door is the simpler choice.

For wider garden openings where a folding configuration makes more sense, our folding walls are designed specifically for that use case.

Design it easily yourself

Configure your external aluminium door

Design your external aluminium door step by step in our configurator. When you select an external configuration, the weather-rating upgrades are included automatically. You do not need to manually select double glazing or weather sealing. Those are part of the external specification as standard.

Choose your door type, enter your dimensions, pick your bar layout and glass, and the price updates in real time. The all-in price reflects the higher specification compared to the internal range, so you can compare the two directly before you decide.

Finishes for external aluminium doors

All standard Emezzi finishes are available on external doors. Matt black RAL9005 is the default and the most popular choice for garden rooms, where it reads as a deliberate architectural choice rather than a standard fitting.

White suits coastal and Scandi schemes where the palette is light and the door needs to blend rather than contrast. Bronze and gold are available for warmer, more design-led schemes. Any RAL colour is available. The powder-coated finish is UV-stable and rated for long-term external exposure under UK weather conditions.

Measuring means knowing

Custom-made dimensions, fitted across the UK

Every Emezzi external aluminium door is made to measure. Our installer visits the site for a measurement visit, confirms the opening dimensions, checks the structure, and scopes the installation detail specific to external use.

Installing external doors include steps that the install of internal doors do not: flashing at the threshold, a drainage check, and a final weather-seal verification once the door is in place. This means a typical external install takes roughly half a day longer than an equivalent internal door. The door is then manufactured in the workshop and installed by Emezzi-authorised dealers across the UK.

Is your question not listed? We’er happy to help!

How weatherproof are Emezzi external aluminium doors?

The standard specification includes weather-sealed gaskets, threshold drainage, and a thermally-broken profile engineered for typical UK weather conditions, including driving rain. For exposed coastal sites or extreme weather locations, our specialist scopes the right specification during the measurement visit. The standard spec covers the large majority of UK installations.

What is the U-value of the external aluminium doors?

The standard double-glazed configuration meets the thermal requirements for garden rooms and conservatories under UK building regulations. Triple-glazed units are available for premium thermal performance. Our advisor confirms the exact figures for your specific configuration during the measurement visit.

Do external aluminium doors meet UK building regulations?

The standard external specification meets the thermal and safety requirements of UK building regulations. For self-builds or significant extensions, our specialist and your building control inspector confirm the specific compliance requirements at the planning stage.

Can I use these as my main front door?

The standard Emezzi external range suits partially-protected external openings well. For a fully-exposed main front entrance, buyers should confirm PAS 24 and Secured by Design security requirements with their insurer. For that specific use case, specialist front-door suppliers are often the better fit.

Will the powder-coated finish fade in UK sun and rain?

The powder-coated finish is UV-stable and rated for long-term external exposure. It is the same specification used on external architectural aluminium across the UK and Europe, with a proven track record over decades. Annual cleaning with a damp cloth keeps the finish looking its best.

Is there a difference in price between internal and external versions?

External doors are priced higher than equivalent internal doors because of the double glazing, weather sealing, thermal break, and multi-point locking included as standard. The configurator shows the all-in price so you can compare directly with the internal steel door range before placing an order.
